Moleskin
printed on Rizo MZ-770 and hand bound, etition of 50, 2024
This instructional pamphlet is the result of a collaboration between Hermione Spriggs and traditional tanner Peter Ananin. Together, we experimented with techniques and ingredients to develop a non-toxic method for processing moleskin.
The catching of moles occurs due to their perceived status as pests in the English countryside. The moles we worked with were gifted by molecatchers based in North Yorkshire, in exchange for items made from the resulting moleskin and a copy of this publication. We worked together in Peter’s micro-tannery in Glen Lyon, Scotland.
The publication contains short essays on moleskin and the cultural history of moles, alongside step by step instructions for tanning moleskin. We want to emphasise that this publication does not endorse the killing of moles for their fur. Instead, we offer the means of sustainably and ethically processing moles that are already being caught for pest control purposes.
